Verifying Lync Mobility Service with browser throws the error: “Internet Explorer cannot download / from lyncdiscover.domain.com. Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.”

Problem

You have just successfully deployed Lync Mobility Service in your environment and would like to verify that external clients can successfully reach the published autodiscover web site and retrieve the redirection information.  You proceed to launch a web browser from an desktop that is external to the network and browse to:

https://lyncdiscover.domain.com

… but you receive the following error:

Internet Explorer cannot download / from lyncdiscover.domain.com.

Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

You also try the following URL:

https://lyncdiscover.domain.com/Autodiscover/AutodiscoverService.svc/root

… but still receive a similar error:

Internet Explorer cannot download root from lyncdiscover.domain.com.

Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

Solution

The reason why you’re getting this error is actually quite simple and that’s because you are using Internet Explorer version 8 or older.  In order to download the file with the redirection information, you need to use Internet Explorer 9:
