Attempting to mount an Exchange 2010 mailbox database throws the error: “Couldn't mount the database that you specified. Specified database: DatabaseName - Light; Error code: An Active Manager operation failed. Error: The database action failed. Error: Operation failed with message: MapiExceptionTooManyMountedDatabases: Unable to mount database. (hr=0x8004060e, ec=-2147219954)”

Problem

You’re attempting to mount a database on your Exchange 2010 server but run into the following errors:

Exchange Management Shell command completed:
new-mailboxdatabase -Server 'MBX01' -Name 'Contoso Students - Light' -EdbFilePath 'E:\Exchange IS\Contoso Students - Light\Contoso Students - Light.edb' -LogFolderPath 'F:\Exchange Logs\Contoso Students - Light'

Mount Contoso Students - Light
Failed

Error:

Clicking the Finish button closes the window and you can see that the database does not get mounted:

You proceed to check the information store folder and notice that it is empty:

The folder for the logs of the database is also empty:

Note: Make sure you do not mistaken the error message above as the same as the following KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977960 because the error we have is MapiExceptionTooManyMountedDatabases where as the KB’s error is actually MapiExceptionNotFound.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you were to review the application logs of the Exchange server, you’ll see the following error logged:

Event ID: 3154

Active Manager failed to mount database Saltus Students - Medium on server SALSMBX01.saltusnet.com. Error: An Active Manager operation failed. Error: The database was never mounted..

image

Solution

The solution is actually quite simple because the error is actually caused by the fact that Exchange Server 2010 is not licensed (you get a 120 day trial upon installing Exchange 2010) and therefore is limited to 5 databases until a serial number is entered.  This is shown in the application logs via event ID: 9591:

Exceeded the max number of 5 MDBs on this server.

Upon launching the Exchange Management Console, you should see a pop up windows similar to the following:

Once you’ve entered a serial number for the mailbox server, you should now be able to mount the 6th database:

To fix this error, I used an advance Exchange server recovery tool that not only fixed this error but also helped me to mount the database directly to the MS Exchange Server.

A bit of info that could also be helpful, you'll notice that when you input the key, it will tell you that you have to restart the Information Store before it will take effect. So you can also put the key in, but it won't let you mount the DB until you restart that service.
